Is It Time to Replace My Car…Or Can I Repair It?
When to Sell or Fix Your Bay Area Used Car
Living in the Bay Area can be quite expensive. Perhaps you’ve been perusing the Bay Area used cars for sale listings in preparation to sell your own clunker. Or maybe you’re searching for a used auto parts or auto dismantler in the Bay Area to take your vehicle off your hands for good. In either case, you might be hesitating.
Is it really time to junk your car? Or can you repair it safely and economically with used auto parts?
Here are a few concepts to consider:
- If you own your car — and you’ve paid off your loan — give strong consideration to repairing the vehicle.
- Find out the trade-in value of your car. Then calculate the down payment you could put towards a new car. What monthly loan or leasing arrangement can you afford?
- Holding onto an old car can keep your auto insurance rates lower, since new cars in general are more expensive to insure.
- On the other hand, perhaps the guidebooks and reviewers just don’t like the make and model of your car, for whatever reason. If so, maybe you should just sell the car and move on with your life.
Here are some other questions to consider before making the decision:
- How old is the car?
- How much mileage is on it?
- What do objective reports, like Consumer Reports, say about the make and model of your car – particularly older/beat up version of the vehicle?
- How carefully have you (and the previous owners) taken care of the car?
- What types of wear and tear have beset the vehicle?
- What problems, if any, have you encountered with the car?
- Has the car been in any accidents?
- Has the car undergone major repairs?
- Will you need to take out an upside down loan on the vehicle?
- How much will it cost to market the car? Remember, in addition to parts and labor, factor in the cost of your own time. If your work pays you $80 an hour, and you need to spend 10 hours of the work week marketing your car, you’re committing $800 of your time.
